Hellooooo...

So the texts have been sent and the moms have been called. I'm curious to who's reading this thing...
Please leave a comment so we know who all we're blogging to.

Love you all.

A time to comment

Well, I have some down time to do more than give brief health updates so I'll take a chance to write about other stuff.
So last night we went home. We made some chocolate chip cookies (I know, domestic, but whatever). We're trying to perfect a recipe to perfect these things so they'll be baby's favorite cookies ever and hopefully will compete with the awesomeness that will be Grandma Pam's cookies. We've got some tricks down, now we're going to tweak ingredients.
Anyhow, I digress. Last night we almost immediately went to bed (around 9:30pm) to anticipate getting up at 4:30am to be at the hospital by five.
This morning we took Dan down to pee, fed his idiot face, then headed out the door. That pretty much brings us to where we're at now, watching The Today Show. Since we came in before the shift change from night to day, we've met about five nurses, but now we're in for the long-run with Anita and her helper (student?) Chelsea.

It's 8:30 in the am on Wednesday the 3rd. Stacia is nearly 5 cm dilated. No contractions yet. Baby's healthy and looking good.

The Pitocin Begins

We're at the hospital. It's taken FOREVER, but Stacia finally has a pitocin drip going to induce the labor.

In the Hospital

Posted by: Cal

Stacia and I are in the hospital. I won't get into it, but they're using a non-drug method to try and induce labor. Right now they're monitoring baby.

Things are looking good, so hopefully Stacia and I will be able to go home tonight. If not, we'll stay the night.

In the meantime, I ran and got us food from Thai-ku.

And we're watching Brian Williams report the news.

If we go home, and Stacia doesn't naturally kick into labor, then we'll come back at 5 in the morning (ugh) for the pit drip.

Induction Update - 24 Hour Delay

The update is that our induction has been postponed until 6pm tomorrow (Tuesday) due to crowding at the birth center. On the downside, this is an emotional roller coaster! On the upside, we have been given an extra 24 hours to get baby out without medical assistance.

Years ago I came across a quote that I'm reminded of now, "Patience equals concentrated strength." I hope this is true, and that I can reserve that strength for these last few days of pregnancy, and the more important days ahead when baby comes home to stay.

Induction, here we come!

Since we're nearly two weeks past the estimated due date, we've been monitored closely to make sure baby is doing well on the inside. This morning Cal and I took baby in for another ultrasound, and they discovered that our amniotic fluid levels are too low, and we are now looking at induction.

Since the start of my pregnancy I've been pretty vocal about my desire to give birth without "tinkering" so I have to admit this is quite a blow. However, I consulted my uber-hippy birthing books and they all agree that low amniotic fluid is an appropriate situation for medical induction. So, I'm working on putting aside my prior expectations and now just focusing on the joy that I'll finally get to meet baby in a day or two!

During the ultrasound Cal thought that baby's face looked a bit like my dad, so he has last minute bets on a boy. However, I look like my dad too, so we're still 50/50 on the whole gender issue. Adding to the confusion is baby's apparent insistence on keeping the left hand over the eyes, so really, we're speculating based on cute cheeks and a little nose. We can't wait to meet you baby!

For those of you into details... We're heading to the hospital at 8pm this evening where they will begin the induction using a foley catheter. This is a non-drug method of induction which has no guarantee to start contractions, but should make a ton of progress in dilation of my cervix. They will let me go for about twelve hours using the catheter. If I haven't started contractions on my own, then they will start me on pitocin in the morning. I'm really, really, really hoping to start contractions prior to the use of pitocin! I was walking with a friend recently who was induced using pitocin and she said "It's the devil." Fortunately, Cal is as prepped as he can be to support me throughout all of this - so I have good hopes for a positive labor and delivery experience on the whole.

We'll be posting updates to the blog as we're able, and as there is actual new news to post. Can you believe I'm having a December baby?!
